Organizations
are defined by those who invest in them. Choristers Guild has been
blessed by many such leaders. Though most Choristers Guild members
never had the opportunity to meet Ena White, she was as vital to
the vision and survival of the Guild as those who conducted workshops
or composed music.
Ena
S. White was one of the most faithful staff members in the 60-year
history of the Guild, serving as its chief financial officer for
33 years—from 1970-2003. Ena was born on March 13, 1929 in
Temple, Texas. She passed away in Dallas on October 24, 2009 after
a struggle against cancer.
Ena
graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1946, and from Southern
Methodist University (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1950. She was a faithful
member of her congregation in Dallas, Lake Highlands United Methodist
Church.
Many
friends of Ena and the Guild have offered their remembrances of
her life.
Former
staff member Don Campbell notes: “The first time I visited
the Choristers Guild office in 1975 Ena greeted me with joy, exuberance
and an open heart-felt warmth. She was my best friend for the years
I worked with CG and remained so long after I moved to Colorado.
I met with her every New Year's Eve when I visit Dallas. She was
a constant, loving and cheerful, living anthem. How she will be
missed. May she rest in eternal peace and harmony.”
David
Rodgers, a long time Choristers Guild member, writes: “Ena
will be missed by all - her laughter, her kind and caring spirit,
her generous and heart-felt concern for others, and her love and
commitment for her church. She was a long and loyal employee of
Choristers Guild, providing assistance and guidance to many who
worked along side her. Thank you Ena for sharing your life with
us.”
Composer
and former board member Michael Bedford said: “Ena was on
the staff of Choristers Guild when I joined for the first time in
1973, and I got to know her best during my seven-year tenure on
the CG Board from 1994 to 2000. She was always a delight, and we
shared many stories and laughs. I know she is now holding forth
in her special way with all the saints who have gone before us.
Godspeed, Ena!”
Fellow
staff member Barbara Merry remembers: “Ena embodied all that
was good. Her warm laugh and joyous spirit touched many both through
her dedication to her church, her family and friends and to Choristers
Guild. She will be greatly missed.”
Former
executive director James Steel shares: “Ena was a devoted
and faithful colleague, friend, and confidant. I cherish the beautiful
handwritten notes and cards that I have received from her through
the years. I cherish the fond memories of her friendship, encouragement,
and love. I celebrate her love for life, her laughter, her positive
energy, her loyalty to friends and family, and her passing from
this phase of earthly life to the peace and joy of eternal life.”
Fellow
staff member Billie Newton sends, "Ena and I worked together
for more than 30 years until I retired in 2002. We attended and
shared a room together at Board meetings when they were not held
in Dallas. She was a dear friend, always kind and thoughtful and
ready to help in any way she could. We all miss her greatly and
will cherish all the wonderful memories we have of her. She was
a joy to all who knew her, always laughing and caring, she believed
in all things Choristers Guild."
Former
board president and interim executive director Michael Hawn recalls:
“Wherever Ena
was, there was always laughter. In addition to her love for people,
she had great ‘style.’ I always enjoyed her many nativity
scenes in the Choristers Guild office at Christmas. The Guild never
had a better friend.”
Former
board president Larry K. Ball observes: “Ena's special love
and dedication to Choristers Guild helped guide and sustain CG through
several eras of the Guilds Garland years. Beyond the skills she
brought to the Guild, she infused such a joyous and happy spirit
in the Guild office. Rest in peace dear Ena, and we who knew and
appreciated her will miss this special gentle lady.”
Finally,
we remember Ena with this prayer:
Eternal
God, we bless you for the great company of all those who have kept
the faith, finished their race, and who now rest from their labor.
We praise you for those dear to us, but especially for your servant
Ena, whom you have now received into your presence.
Help
us to believe where we have not seen, trusting you to lead us through
our years. Bring us at last with all your saints into the joy of
your home, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.*
