CGA838 Nova, Nova
Description
Although this is an original text, it is loosely based on a 15th century English carol. It depicts the Annunciation story in which the angel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary and tells her that she will give birth to the Son of God. The use of the dance-like triple meter, the pure minor scale (lonian mode), and the optional flute and tambourine creates a late Medieval/early Renaissance quality. The short three-line verses and repetitive refrain make this anthem easy to memorize. Even though it is appropriate for the first Sunday of Advent in some denominations, others who celebrate a 'Mary Sunday' during Advent may want to incorporate it on that day.
Voicing: Unison with keyboard, optional flute, and optional tambourine
Composer: Michael Bedford
Text: Michael Bedford
Scripture: Luke 1:26-31, 38, 46
Season: Advent
Lectionary: Year B - Advent - Fourth Sunday of Advent
